For many working parents, back-to-school means back-to-a-regular-work-schedule. If you’re anything like me, that comes as a welcome relief after spending more than a year running a small business, running a house, and trying to keep a teenager motivated in his virtual classroom.
Some things inevitably fell through the COVID cracks. If that thing was updating your website, now is a great time for a tune-up. Here are four tips to get you started:
Give your site a good once-over.
Your website should make a great first impression. So go through every page. Do you need to fix broken links? Does your contact form still work? Fill it out to make sure messages end up in your inbox and not lost in cyberspace! If you have employees, are staff titles and contact information accurate? What about the descriptions of your products / services? Does your copy need a rewrite to reflect where your business is today?
Add some fresh content.
The easiest way to keep Google happy is to update your website with useful content on a regular basis. So, if it’s been ages since you posted a blog or added an article to your news section - what are you waiting for? It's time to get writing!
Check your hosting plan.
The last 18 months have been a blur, so you’ll be forgiven if you have no idea when your hosting and domain accounts expire. Now is a good time to check. If your accounts are set up for automatic renewal, make sure your credit card information is up-to-date so you don’t have any unfortunate surprises!
Assess the overall design.
Your website can be accurate and packed with great content, but if the design looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2009 it may be sending the wrong message about your business. How do your images look on the latest computer monitors? What is the user experience like on a mobile device? If you run an online store, is it easy for people to find what they need? Do you offer a seamless and secure checkout?
Take an objective look at your site and then check out your competition. Your website was never intended to be set in stone – that’s the beauty of online publishing! If it’s time for a brand new site, there’s no time like the present to get started.
